Sabaqa Mehmood is a Pakistani artist and writer. She has been published in the Herald Tribune, al-Araby al-Jadeed, and The Nation. Her first book of short stories entitled "The Unbearable Shantal" was nominated for an award by Jigar magazine and won the award for "Best Fiction Book" at the Pakistan Academy of Letters Awards in 2016. Her latest release is "The Burnt Flowers". Her work mainly focuses on women's rights and social issues faced by women at different levels; this includes female genital mutilation (FGM), female infanticide, racism, domestic violence against women, human trafficking among others. Thakral is also an activist in the movement for women's rights. She is the founder of the Women's Action Forum, which she established in 2010 after spending four weeks in Turkey researching FGM. The forum works closely with women in Pakistan, particularly rural women, to raise awareness about issues such as FGM and domestic violence through seminars and workshops. It provides legal aid to victims of domestic violence, and has successfully managed to get convictions for members of the public who have committed crimes against women, including child sexual abuse. The forum has launched its own helpline for victims of violence. Thakral lives in Karachi with her husband, two children and two cats.
